Fuck I hate this type of people so much, they think Fu Shen is going to betray the emperor but its that thinking that will lead them to their demise, soooo stupid

Although I agree with you that unwarranted distrust from emperors is frustrating, there is precedent in history of rebellions. That’s when emperors failed to have the appropriate amount of paranoia or were otherwise powerless. The emperors that ARE paranoid enough prevent rebellions or keep tabs on them to prevent potential rebellions. That seat on the throne is all a balancing act. They have to assign the right generals to the right places and give the right award to keep them satisfied while ALSO using other means to keep them in check. Generals can’t be weak to the point they can’t attack or defend enemies of the nation, but they can’t be strong enough to have a rebellion. Emperors can’t read minds, they have spies but not all the info, generals might align with another power other than the emperor, people in court will manipulate info to breed mistrust, generals may be especially greedy for power, etc. There are a lot of factors in why an emperor should or should not trust a general, but no way to be absolutely sure, especially when generals stationed far away might change their minds. Months, years, decades later, an emperor can’t judge the general with their own eyes and can only rely on written reports if a general is still loyal or not.

The emperor in this story is, naturally, keeping in check a general powerful and popular enough to cause trouble to the throne. Fu Shen spends many years away on the battlefield, there is no good way to reassure the emperor he is still loyal to him and hasn’t been swayed to support someone else for the crown or got powerful enough to want it for himself. Meanwhile, there are a lot of people in power at the capital that can turn the emperor against him if it suits them. The Fu family, another family who might want to take over his army, other people who might want to take him out for their personal reasons, enemy nation that wants to take out a capable general from within, etc.

We as readers know that the emperor’s mistrust is indeed unwarranted, so we’re feeling the anger for him. But the emperor thinks he’s doing right by himself and has one less worry when a strong and popular general (in position to rebel if he wants to) is taken out of commission.

I hope the current emperor and crown prince get their just desserts. I’m also mad on Fu Shen’s behalf. He better not have to suffer under their rule by the end of the story or I’m rioting.

What an intricate piece of work this novel is! You’re doing a great job, and these footnotes are really interesting. I’m kind of impressed to how the author actually gave an in-story historical justification for same-sex marriage between men, in a way that even furthers the conflict of the story!

I agree! The author was thoughtful and intentional in weaving same-sex marriage into the story. No plot point has been wasted so far.

Thank you for translating! I like reading the footnotes 🙂 it gives a lot of context/backstory. I don’t like this emperor at all… I hope Fu Shen will be alright

  4. Aozora says:

Thanks for the chapter! I’ve to reread the past chapter because I lost track of wich Fu Shen realtive is Crwon Prince consort…I did know of the meaning and origins of “cut sleeve” but not the other two, thanks for explaining

  5. Navleu says:

This emperor is despicable! He made up those rumours and now he’s gonna order Yan Xiaohan to marry Fu Shen!! That way he gets rid of both of them. Aaaaagggggh

    Thanks for the chapter!

The footnotes are just amazing, I first have to read them all before reading the whole chapter lol. I want the MC and ML to end up together (ofc) but thinking how they become heirless is kinda saddening.

  10. Haruki Natsuyu says:

All i wish is for this stupid useless prince to die full of regret in his concubines’ schemes.

  11. Mj says:

I hate such people always distrustful of others! It would’ve been a nightmare if MC and ML were really hostile to each other. I hope there is face slapping!
Thank you so much for the chapter!(๑´>᎑<)~❤

  15. shizunluvr says:

Now I’m crying about Emperor Ai and Dong Xian…😭

  16. nanairohana says:

Well paranoia is needed, but did the Emperor eat fart? They are still in the middle of war with two empires? Didn’t he thought of if the two enemies joined hand, how he can survive?? Like, the other armies troops seems useless since Fu Shen’s army is the only one with experience. Quite foolish imho. Much more if later Iron Civalry troop is divided to other generals.

  17. UnicornSquad says:

I’m glad you find your research fun because it is invaluable to this reader. It makes the translation more easily understood. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this novel. It must be exhausting for you. I wish you had carried it on to the end.
